Strong children through gardening in urban areas
The organisation “Ackerhelden machen Schule” aims to connect children in urban areas, especially those from socially disadvantaged families, with nature. Children’s increasing alienation from nature is having a negative impact on their diet and health - an issue this project aims to tackle. Introducing children to organic gardening follows the intend of conveying practical principles such as the value of food and the responsibility tied to gardening.
The project promotes equal opportunities by granting children the practical opportunity to develop knowledge and skills. The “Organic Vegetable Raised Bed” brings learning to life – from responsible plant care to healthy and sustainable eating. The children not only learn about the vegetable growth process, but they acquire knowledge concerning general organic food production and nature. As the children take part in the project in groups, extensive social interactions are actively fostered, leading to greater self-confidence and a sense of integration.
The project targets social institutions supporting early childhood and primary education in socially disadvantaged regions, with a special focus on Essen, Hamburg, and Cologne.
