Fostering creative writing – experiencing community
To mark its 50th anniversary, the Torch Theatre Company has launched the “Cynefin Stories” project, specifically targeting children and young people in Pembrokeshire, Wales. At its core is the creative writing of short plays based on the “verbatim play” method: the young participants interview people in their communities, collect authentic stories and transform them into ten-minute pieces. Through this process, they not only learn key writing techniques and how to conduct interviews, but also build self-confidence and encourage exchange between generations. The project stands for preserving storytelling traditions, strengthening social ties in the local area and promoting reading and writing skills in a contemporary and motivating way.
In addition to workshops and writing training at a total of 16 schools, the resulting works are published in a book, presented digitally on “The Pembrokeshire Story” website and displayed in an exhibition. A selection of the texts is also brought to the stage by the Torch Youth Theatre, making this creative work visible and tangible for the entire community.
