Acceptance through education
Whether it is due to illness or because they belong to other minority groups, children often face exclusion in their everyday school life.
The “Maggie’s Center Groningen” project aims to counteract this by age-appropriately educating pupils on how to deal with chronic illnesses such as cancer, thereby promoting empathy and mutual support. Sick children learn to openly talk about their situation, while their classmates learn how they may create a supportive environment through understanding and open attitudes. These conveyed values can also be applied to other forms of discrimination.
The school programme offers teachers methodological support and teaching materials, especially for structurally weak regions such as East Groningen. At the Maggie’s Center, pupils and their families have access to comprehensive support services, including one-to-one counselling, peer groups, and consulting on topics such as education, finances, and palliative care.
